Who is your target audience❓

Who is your target audience? Who do you have in mind when you are coming up with new video ideas and titles and descriptions? How do you decide which ideas get made and which ideas get cut?

Most YouTubers I've talked to haven't really thought of this. They just assume that everyone will love their content and avoid narrowing their target audience. The issue is if you are trying to do everything and please everyone it becomes more difficult to stand out and even harder to have a consistent vibe and feel throughout your channel. On the other hand, if you focus your content to a particular person / type of person it can help you focus your content.

It helps if you are specific about who your target audience is. For example 3 tech channels, (don't worry this isn't tech or gamer channel exclusive), on Youtube with different vibes and different target audiences: MKBHD, Gamers Nexus, and Linus Tech Tips. While they are all tech channels, Linus Tech Tips is mainly for PC related content tailored to people are looking to build a new computer and like jokes, Gamers Nexus is tailored to people who really really really love specs and probably studied computer science, and MKBHD is mainly for all things mobile phones and I feel is mainly tailored to people who are on the market for a new cellphone, an honest review, and really really high-resolution videos.

You may not want to define your target audience because it can feel like you are limiting your channel growth. Targeting all cooks might sound like a good idea because the world is full of cooks. But when you dial it in and target specifically college students who needs to learn to cook for fear of starving, it helps focus your channel. Maybe whether or not the food is actually healthy isn't that important, but keeping it as quick as possible is top priority so they can get back to studying and playing hacky sack. On the other hand, if you target cooks who are dads who only just started cooking during quarantine maybe that means you really have to consider the nutritional value of the foods your are preparing and over-explain basic cooking concept because you don't expect your audience to already know that . . .

Defending your target audience doesn't actually limit who will watch your videos. I'm a subscriber to "Do it On a Dime" and "The Financial Diet" two channels I feel predominantly target woman and that perfectly fine. It is very likley that in having a target audience and making great content for them, you will also grab the attention of people outside of your target.

So who is your target audience?
What kind of person are they? What do they like? What do they dislike? What sort of other people would you expect them to be subscribed to? What kind of references do you expect them to get?

Can't wait to read your replies ^_^

Majority of my target audience are likely to be interested in Sony mirrorless camera gear operation/settings/visuals/reviews, but in future I may focus more on photo/videography tutorials which will target a wider audience not just limited to 1 camera brand.

I think my target audience is 18 year old me:
Someone curious about the world and enjoys to over-analysis about mundane life
like to connect seemingly random topics together in a way that somehow make sense
looking for an online community to be a part of
keeps up with current events but doesn't care about current gossip or even sports (*for the most part*)
