What is the best way to provide editing notes to an editor??

Hi everyone -

I have been producing videos, and a good friend of mine is doing the editing. It's a great arrangement since he's a fast editor and I'm not :)

So far, Ive been using regular documents to give editing notes like removing clips or putting text overlays, etc. I'll put in a timestamp and just write stuff like, "Remove from 01:43 where I say 'hello there' all the way through 2:03 where I say "something else".

It works but it's kind of cumbersome. There must be some 'best way' to give notes to a video editor! Does anyone have any ideas about how to do it more easily??

thanks - Dave

If you've worked with him enough, maybe let him do the editing without giving him notes? Maybe specific notes on certain things that you dislike, but a lot of the time an editor can spot the bad and will automatically remove it. You might be surprised at what he thinks is best and what he decides to hadd.

I worked with my boyfriend on his thesis film and he just let me at it and was amazed at how the little changes I made really enhanced the video.

Hi, thanks for your reply! The videos I'm making are about a technical topic so it's going to be hard for him to really understand how to take 10 min. of raw footage and bring it down to <6 minutes - the subject matter is pretty specific with techy jargon, etc. plus there are a lot of text overlays that I need to write up myself. I would love it if there was an editor who could understand the subject matter well enough to edit without notes, but I'm doubtful I could find out.

Do you mean techy in terms of computers...I would be willing to edit as long as the videos weren't ridiculously frequent (like every other day) since I know a fair amount about computers

The videos provide information about technical management issues, i.e. things targeted towards CTOCIO's. There are 3 videos weekly. We are very happy with our editor, just looking for the best way to collaborate with him.
