Using iPhone as Mic?

What I used before as a mic was a crappy headset with a really crappy mic. I don't think it would be a good idea to buy a mic yet, so I wanted to use my iPhone as a mic. I downloaded a few different apps that are supposed to make your iPhone work as a mic, but every time I plugged it in (with a 3.5mm male to male aux cord) the computer wouldn't recognize the mic. When I go to devices, it just says internal microphone. I tried waiting a few minutes with no change. But when I plugged in the headset it recognized it immediately. What can I do to make my iPhone work as a mic? My laptop only has one headphone jack and it is headphone/mic mixed, I'm not sure if that affects it. Sorry for the long post.
 
I really suggest getting either a new headset that's a bit better quality. Mine was only like 40$ on Amazon I think. And it sounds pretty good. Or even a new stand alone mic
