I've been using Reddit for the past 8 months to grow my channel, and I wanna share one of my secrets on how to rank number one in Subreddits. First, your content has to be decent and what the people in the subreddit are looking for. There's no going around this. But I wanna focus more on the timing of your post, and how Reddit ranks posts and submission. Because reality is, usually only the top post shows up in people's home page and that gets most of the views. You can have an amazing video, but it won't get as much views if your timing is off. If math is not your thing, then I will do my best to explain. Reddit is open source, so I was able to interpret the formula. This is a simplified version of the algorithm.
Score = 12.5 Hours * log(10)(N) + T
Posts with a higher score are ranked higher
N = the net difference of up votes and down votes. Ex: A post with 50 up-votes and 40 down-votes, N = 10. It's the number you see beside the post.
T = is the time difference in seconds between the time of your submission and December 8th 2005, 7:46 a.m . All you need to know is that posts that are more recent will have a greater T, which means a greater score, hence why in general more recent posts end up on top.
Now to understand the first part of the equation which deals with up-votes. All you need to know is that
Log(10)(1) = 0
Log(10)(10) = 1
Log(10)(100) = 2
Log(10)(1000) = 3
Log(10)(10000) = 4
Think of Up-votes basically allowing your post to travel in time, but they have diminishing returns. Getting 10 up-votes will give you a bonus of 12.5 Hours. Getting 100 up-votes will get you a bonus 25 Hours, 1000 gets you 37.5 Hours and 10000 gets you 50 Hours.
Ex: If you get 100 up votes, the formula would look like
Score = 12.5 Hours * log(10)(100) + T
= 12.5 Hours * 2 + T
= 25 Hours + T
That means someone who makes a post 25 Hours and one second later than you will pass you in ranking, even without a single up-vote.
So how does this help you? Well if the video that's number one has 1000 net up-votes, don't even think about making a post until about 24-37.5 hours has past since that person made that post. You want to maximize how long your post stays number one.
If you can understand the general concept of this, it can make the difference between hundreds to tens of thousands of views. If anyone has questions feel free to ask.
