Be careful with beaning to funny and entertaining when it comes to tutorials. Yes it's great to be entertaining but when it comes to tutorials a lot of people are just there for the information and if you go to much off topic and take up to much of their time with stuff that are not the reason they are watching the tutorial it may end up hurting you. I do videos for a product that releases a new version each year so some of the tutorials I do is the same for each version. I used to talk a lot, tell a joke and go little bit off topic because of that. But for the last few version I have tried harder and harder to cut out more and more of the "extra stuff" to make the tutorial as compact as possible with clear facts. It has defiantly made the tutorial less entertaining, but it has also made the tutorial more on point.
Here the result from some of does tutorials (I'm using the first 300 days for each video):
Tutorial 1 - I managed to cut out 54 seconds between the 2018 version and the 2019 version and then another 47 seconds between the 2019 version and 2020 version. The 2020 version have now gotten almost twice the amount of views, 139.9k compared to 70.3k for the 2018 version.
Tutorial 2 - I manage to cut out 70 seconds between the 2018 version and the 2020 version. The 2020 version have gotten more then twice the amount of views in the same time, 88.2k compared to 43.6k for the 2018 version.
I have a bunch for more videos and the result look more or less exactly the same. And since my tutorials got shorter even if other people tutorials are number one in the search results mine often get more views. I believe that when someone wants to learn something they do a search and then find 10 tutorials for it they tend to try the 4 min version before they try the 7 min version, they want a quick fix.
