Monetization Question.

Okay, I originally saw a video on YouTube that said you can kind of cheat your way to getting a custom thumbnail through the use of putting at the end and trimming the video later. However, YouTube I guess caught on so now you can't. So, is there ANYWAY to get a custom thumbnail without monetizing your videos?

And for the record, what exactly does monetizing your videos entail? I don't want this on like my taxes and stuff before I know that I'm actually going to make MONEY off of these videos which is when I get a bunch more loyal subscribers. So, what's the exact benefits+risks of monetization?
 
If you want thumbnails just enable monetization on one video...even if its a 5 second video of the wall. The only risk is that if someone click bombs you and you get your adsense disabled...but if you have only one video with ads on that will probably NEVER happen and even if that did happen you don't lose your channel or anything you just lose the ability to ever make money with that channel.
