Machinima - My experience over the last year...

I wanted to share my personal experience as a Machinima Partner (now Director) so that it may give an insight into what they're really like, first-hand from a small YouTuber.

-----------------------

I applied to become a Machinima Partner last summer when my channel only had 700 subscribers. I was just starting to understand the right way to use YouTube for uploading gaming content (ie: importance of audio and video quality, content, metadata, etc...). They offered me their base rate, which to me, at the time, seemed a rather small offering. Obviously, after making some calculations, I realised that if I kept on growing then eventually I'd be earning quite a lot from my videos (approximately $200 for 100,000 views). That was only the base rate too, the amount of money you receive per 1,000 views will increase as your channel grows.

So with the whole "Machinima" name, I started gaining subscribers a tad more quickly. That and extra advertising of my channel and its content, led to me getting around 1,300 subscribers. A lot of talk has been done about how Machinima mistreats their smaller channels, which is untrue in my case. Not only did they provide advice and support when needed, they also gave me fantastic opportunities to earn a little extra money from liking a video to featuring it on my channel for an hour or so. I made around $100 just from liking one of their BSG real-life episodes!

>A negative however, is the lack of promotion that they themselves offered me. I had to keep in mind that I was only a partner, not a director. I knew that Director's were more flexible in their approach to CPM, promotion, etc.

Yet another fantastic opportunity presented itself very recently, when Machinima UK had made an offer to their UK partners to go up to London to visit and use the new YouTube London Studios furnished with state of the art equipment. They were offering free workshops and free use of equipment for a whole day (obviously travel and accommodation would not be paid for) and sadly I could not attend due to school.

>So far, I've been given lots of new opportunities, lots of help with a decent pay which I'm not too bothered about. I'm only a small channel and at the age of 16, earning that much from sitting down and playing games does not bother me whatsoever.

Obviously, this may all change in the future if I happen to get more than 100,000 subscribers (which I doubt, lol!) when I start thinking about keeping professional commentating as a job to rely on in my university years, etc.

But there you have it, my Machinima story in a nutshell. They aren't all corporate and bad (from what I've seen and experienced) and they're a friendly bunch who enjoy helping you out. Hopefully this has given some brief insight into the life of a Machinima partner and maybe it'll help you in choosing a network.

Thanks a lot for reading guys, hope you have a great day.

good to hear a positive side to things :] I've been reading so much hate and didn't think it could be ALL bad, you know?

Well made note of text there! Love to see people telling about their own experience about something makes me want to read it ^^

Thanks a lot for the response guys :) - I hope I don't get into trouble for badmouthing them slightly, and if I do, the worst they can do is cancel my contract and even then I can survive without them at this point anyway!

You're entitled to an opinion, they can't possibly do you for that :) but you may want to remove (or at least make it more vague) where you talk about your earnings. That's breach of contract.
