My channel has a split personality problem. If you looked at my channel and tried to sum up what it’s about, you’d say:
It’s a surfing channel!
or
It’s a travel channel vlogging about US cities!
It’s a bad mix, and is dragging down the number of people that subscribe PER views. Like 1 out of 700 with this mixed content vs 1 out of 140 when I was sticking to 1 kind of content.
I plan on taking all of 1 type of content OFF the channel, and starting a new channel with it.
So the question is… is there a notion of “channel authority?” Like youtube gives your channel more algo love with certain content?
does youtube “Like” when I post surf vids to this channel but not travel vids? Is that possible, or am I imagining this?
My highest view travel vid has 5K views, and my highest recent surf vid has 1.3K views. BUT… I do have an old surf vid I posted years ago that got 200K views.
That’s the other factor - I posted a handful of surf vids (less than 20) to the channel about 10 years ago. Then the channel sat for 8+years. This March I started working on it again adding both travel and surf content, as I fumbled around the YouTube-verse making rookie mistakes.
I would just hate to break out the surf vids to a new channel and have it totally tank. Or vice versa, break out the travel vids to a new channel and it bombs.
I don’t know what to do??
I do know I have to break the content out. If you can’t easily answer the question “What’s your channel about?” with ONE thing, I think you’re setting yourself up for failure.
