How to get custom Thumbnails??

So I heard you can unlock them by either being a partner or monetising videos through youtube. Problem is I do gaming videos and I can't monetise the videos unless I'm with a network or it will make joining a network a nightmare down the road.

Is there any truth to these rumours I heard because I really want to be able to use custom thumbnails !!

why not just make a video you CAN monetize? Maybe a vlog telling what you do on your channel or a top 10 talking about your top 10 favorite games or something? And yeah you gotta monetize to get em.

Yeah, there's an option to monetize your videos or not.

1) Enable your account for monotization
2) Partner with a third-party network
