Deciding on a Niche

Heyo,

Just wondering how you guys all decided on a niche (particularly any gamers reading this). I know a niche would probably help my channel grow, but I do better recording whatever I want to play, even if the market for it is kinda oversaturated. Is it necessary to pick an original niche or could you choose one that might be a little harder to get noticed in?
 
I'd say the "niche" for a gaming channel is more the personality of the YouTuber rather than the games he/she plays. Games come and go but a strong personality will always be there. :)
