covers and copyright

I've Got It
hello everybody

i have an old channel where i made drum covers (youtube.com/vaneess16).
i stopped making videos a while a go 'cause of time and no motivation..

now i want to do this again. but i don't know how to start
i don't have licences for songs so i get copyright issues. i know with a network it probably would work. but i can not apply to a network without new videos and activities on my channel..

can someone give my e a tip please? :)

how did you start with covers?

This is a myth. Just because you are part of a network doesn't mean that you get free reign to cover songs. You must find a network that has the licenses to the songs that you want to play.

Or, you find out which songs are being allowed to be played on YouTube but THEY get the advertising revenue, not you. (The original rights holder)

I don't know. It seems that there are quite a few networks nowadays that don't have any standards. That being said, maybe you can do a video with a sample of you free-styling. At least you'd have a video with some views.

thank you, that's true. i heard that not every network has the right licences :)
but if "THEY" get the advertising revenue, so today nobody makes money with their covers?

this is a good point. i was thinking of a video with just some freestyle beats and impro :)

Two different categories.
1. Some people allow Tubers to use their songs but the original rights holder gets the funds. (ie Harlem Shake)
2. Some Networks have permission for their partners to cover certain songs. I know that Fullscreen has agreements but I don't know what the revenue share is. I'm sure that Fs wouldn't get content deals unless Fs and and the cover artist (you) were getting part of the revenue (as well as the Network).

Check out this article which mentions that Fullscreen and Maker Studios have agreements for content creators to cover Universal Artists.

This isn't my area of expertise so others may give more detailed information.

Best wishes.

Yes, as markkaz said you're able to monetize certain cover songs if your're with Fullscreen (FAM, more particularly). However you can only monetize songs that you can find in the FAM library so obviously you can't cover anything but considering you weren't able to get revenue off ANY cover video a few month ago, it's a huge thing. They say they'll upload the database which is amazing. Oh and by the way, you're only allowed to monetize your cover if you fully reproduced the song - meaning that you can't use the original song in any way (which might be a trouble if you make drum covers?).
