i do check out other people's channels who leave great comments and i wonder as i genuinely leave comments whether people would do the same. i haven't noticed any change in subs growth

I know he's still popular but because since 2010 YouTube's changed a lot spamming the comment section of popular videos isn't going to work any more. Everyone else has got the same idea.

Yep! If you comment anything that people like then they're likely to check out your channel, I once got quite a few subscribers after I commented something on Dan and Phil's gaming video, but don't go around desperately trying to think of something funny to comment haha
