The best free screen recorder for recording youtube videos that I have used is the BB Flashback Screen Recorder from Blueberry Software. It has loads of features and is really easy to use. It can also upload directly to Youtube. The full list of features is available here.
The features I like the most are:
Automatically start recording at a certain time or when a certain program is launched.
Non-stop recording. When it runs out of space to save to it starts reducing the file size to allow you to continue recording all the time.
Converts to flash and AVI - Both accepted on Youtube.
I really think anyone looking for simple screen capture software should check it out. It also has paid upgrades available if you get really serious.
