Our channel finally hit 200 subs today after just over 2 years since we put up our first video in November of 2014. This seems like a long time, but there are a ton of reasons for the slow growth. First, we were very bad at SEO, and putting up videos consistently at the start.
We also never started promoting the channel until July of this year, this is because we do long playlists for a few games, so we neither have the variety, nor the specialization to let us grow a bit faster, so we decided to build a base of a lot of videos before we started on promoting. This is something that we are still learning about, and we're getting better, but still have a long way to go before we start seeing real results, though we are seeing results, since we started, we have gained almost 100 subs from it.
Another thing we did wrong was that our thumbnails were not only unbranded, but were really bad. I'm working to fix this, and our new thumbs (I think) are quite good, I'm also taking this opportunity to fix SEO, descriptions, and anything else that might need fixed on these old videos.
All in all, we aren't doing too badly, but if we had the thumbs, SEO, our current schedule (we're doing 6 a week now, moving to daily soon), promotion, and the friends that we've made since July, I think we would have been much better off. Though, I do think having that base of videos before we started promoting the channel really helped us gain subs despite us still not being very good at it, so I'm happy with that decision.
