150K views from 1.7K subs

Just passed 150,000 views recently and wanted to share a few insights to hopefully help.

I've mentioned before on this forum, but I setup a YouTube channel to share my flying experiences as a Private Pilot. I also love to travel, and a little while back I decided to post a few travel and airline review videos, and those suddenly got a load more exposure and engagement.

So, I decided to pivot the channel a little and went from "Stef's Pilot Channel" to "Stef's Flying and Travel Channel" which allowed me to post the pilot focussed stuff as well as the travel videos and reviews.

As long as I keep the balance right, the channel has continued to grow. I've done another 50K views in about 5 weeks, and am getting about 10 new subs a day now.

The point of my story is - in those early days I know it can be hard to truly understand your audience and your niche, and can be quite demoralising. But in those times my best advice would be to push yourself to try a few different things, try playing with your style or your content a little. See what a) you enjoy making and b) what your audience want to watch. Then keep experimenting until you find a sweet spot and grow from there.

And of course, don't give up. I went through periods of very little audience engagement. I posted videos that I thought were going to be universally loved which only ever got a few hundred views. I've been told my videos suck, been told that I suck, and worse. But if you love making your content, don't stop!

I have a long way to go, but looking back at how I've grown as a creator by experimenting and learning, and by persevering when it all seemed pointless, is my biggest reward.

Hope that helps a little with your goals out there, good luck to you all.
