YouTube Movie... Thoughts?

So I fancy myself a writer on a good day, and I have a decent amount of experience writing screenplays and stage productions. Recently, I had an interesting thought. And I decided to run it by you gals and guys here on the forum. So essentially my question is: How do you feel or what do you think about filming a feature length production specifically for YouTube? Is it worth it; or would it be better to send a script off to a movie company instead? Would you personally watch a low-budget film if it were displayed on YouTube for free?

I only ask because I enjoy the filming process as well as the acting portion involved, too. So I think it would be interesting to attempt such a feat. It would almost be like the YouTube variant of an independent film festival and I would retain all rights and be fully involved unlike the latter in which the film company takes control of the project.

It's just a thought that I figured I'd present to the wonderful people of the YTTalk community. Thanks!

I think that could turn out pretty well, I know there are youtubers who have collaborated to make a full feature film but not for youtube. The film was smiley, directed by TotallySketch :)

Hi there, just moving this to the Script, Script Writing, Video Ideas and Planning section of the forum. Hmmm I think I'd send it off to a movie company first, to see if anyone would be interested in it. I honestly am not sure if people really use Youtube for .....movies. I also think there would be a real danger of people ripping it off and putting it on their own channel etc. But then again....if it's something you feel like you really want to do, then go for it :) You'd probably have to be prepared for a lot of promotion....but either way, good luck :)

Quite a few people do it already and if it's good enough, it can work. I'd say start out with shorts and move your way up when possible.

Story line and good acting, maybe at least 720p but other than that, the budget doesnt really matter to me, i seen films with CGI and all that but still sucked.

You will be fine, I'd actually talked to a few others about this in the past. There are some people that have already done it, and their content turned out to do pretty well.

Thanks for all the feedback guys. It will definitely be something I'll have to explore in the future. And I remember that Smiley movie, I actually kinda liked it. Haha

Personally I don't think it's worth it. Your ROI (Return on Investment) is not worth it. All the time spent writing the script, voice actor casting calls, producing and editing the film, post production. All of those things take time, and on a feature film it would take a lot of time.

I create machinima films on my channel and I have an unfinished film that's about 25 minutes long and still in production. I've been working on it for over 3 months on and off. If you want to grow a channel, spending THAT long on a film is not worth the investment. Even when I do release the film, it will get maybe 2-5k views, unless I get lucky and it's shared out. Spending 3 months of work for only 5k views is not worth it in my opinion.

Spending 2-4 weeks on a film, that's 3-7 minutes is worth it. Your audience retention will be higher (ad companies want high audience retention), and you can produce more quality films that are shorter on a regular basis to grow your channel.

If you want to do a large film on the side, go for it, but get a larger channel on board to showcase the film. Otherwise it will just be a large film that no one ever sees, that you spent 6 months working on.
