Youtube game idea

Hi,

I'm always think of ideas for random things and this one intrigues me. Its based off the board game Atmosphere where players would play the game as they generally would and then the dungeon master or story teller on TV (so a pre recording) would help move the story forward.
My audience initially for this idea would be more for the younger generation or inexperienced players but would also work more for more experienced players as well.
At the moment im basing it along the lines of the pen and paper Dungeons & Dragons. The idea is to have a pre recording of myself or a podcast reading out the story as you play through and explaining the general surroundings and actions taking place. It will still require one person to be a dungeon master for any improvised scenarios and events that take place. Once the encounters are over then the player will press start on the video to continue the story. Every now and then I may even spark a random encounter that happens. Or ask the players to make a specific dice role and it will be up to the dungeon master to action the results.

It sounds very complex I know. And would take a lot of tweaking for it to work for anyone to just pick up and play. But as an initial idea, would you think this would be something people would be interested in?
Many of my friends cant think of ideas for stories so I thought maybe this may help for those stuck with ideas. That way they if they are stuck on ideas they can just play this vid and away they go.

This idea could also work differently like those Ian livingstone battle books you used to get years ago. Not as complex but would be hard to get the choices to work. Unless you add a link on each given choice which will take you to another vid or podcast to see what happens.

Its something anyone can pick up and play

This sounds quite interesting, I myself as an inexperienced player in this sort of game would really enjoy it. I have always liked adventure games and this sounds really cool. I would very much like to hear more about this idea.

I have looked into it further. Its very plausible and will definately work. But I think I would need to make an intro vid to explain any requirements they must have because it will still require the rule books etc for items, spells, character sheets and for the actual DM to know and understand the dice roles etc.
The video in a sense is merely the skeletal structure of the given story to keep the players on the right path. With added music and sound effects I think it could be quite cool and help set up the enviroment and atmosphere of the game for people of all ages.
The players can still improvise in between and the video would throw in its own random events from time to time. The only trouble with that is the random event will always be the same every time you play it. So it has to be a fixed event or something minor.

Currently planning a podcast game anyway so I might structure that story into a game that everyone who watches it can play

I subbed to your channel, it sounds quite interesting :)
aww cheers dude!! Gives me more incentive to do it now haha.
I have an intro to one story I could try to convert as like a tester video to see what people find works and doesnt work and progress it from there.
Currently working until friday so it will be slow progress to begin with. I will let you know when its up.

Oh i subbed back.....cus im nice like that =-p lol

This sounds AWESOME! I loved Atmosphere as a kid (and Knightmare), but found a lot of kids didn't really understand the rules that much.
Just as an idea - it may be less time intensive to make something along the lines of a google doc instead of a "rules video" for you. That way, people can read the rules themselves, review them throughout the game by pausing and then hopefully make it a lot less work for you.
It would be awesome to have it as multiple videos, so at a key plot point, have some annotations - one to take you to "x kingdom" and the other to take you to "y forest" (as an example - make it whatever you want). From there you can have different endings/challenges throughout the game.

............aaaaaand breathe!!!! Sorry man, this just sounds cool as hell!

Best of luck,

Ant

As a hardcore D&D fan, this sounds absolutely rad. I hope it takes off and it does well! Would you do it on your current channel, or a new one?
I was maybe thinking another channel to keep the stories in one place but then again if I just create a playlist for each story it wont matter if its on my current channel and it also keeps all the parts to the story in one place. Prevents anyone accidently clicking on the wrong chapter to a completely different story.

As a tester I was thinking of doing The Warlock of Firetop Mountain by steve jackson and ian livingstone and see what works and what doesnt work. Then I can implement it into my current D&D stories I have been writing up and go from there.

hahaha! Glad you like the idea. Yeah I had the same idea of having links below so the DM can download word documents for rules, maps, encounters, treasure etc. There will also be a seperate map for the DM to see where the hidden events, traps etc are. From there they can improvise around and add things if needed but it gives the players a good base to work with.
