What is going on with all this YouTube drama?

Hey guys,

Just wanted to get a discussion started, I don't really know what my opinions are on this topic. I was wondering what you guys thought about the rise of YouTube drama? There are news channels that are all about highlighting mistakes and drama that happens in the community now, and it even seems like there is more and more drama in smaller communities right now. As a very small YouTuber I have been fortunate enough to avoid any drama thus far, but have you guys experienced any drama in your communities? Do you guys think it negatively or positively impacts YouTube as a whole?

I am honestly interested in your guys' ideas and comments. Enjoy debating!

Josh

It remnids me of the "reply girls" phenomena. I would say - it impacts rather negatively but I don't really have any "strong" opinion about it.
In anyway I am almost never watching them.

The first channel that popped to my mind was DramaAlert. I don't really hate it or love it, but I sometimes watch it just to stay in the loop. I am lucky enough to have avoided it thus far as well.

Hey, Josh! Honestly, I think this is a method of leveraging subscriptions and views for the "bigger" YouTube channels. To me, it's pretty upsetting because YouTube is a creative, collaborative community. Numbers shouldn't matter. That being said, I understand that for a lot of these bigger creators, YouTube is their source of income. Regardless, hiring a marketing manager is a more professional route. Drama really should not have a place in the community.

That is very true. The problem with it is it can really destroy other channels. I also think that drama will exist in any community, and I think it plays an important role in exposing people. The problem is when every single movement is called drama, and people are being falsely accused of serious crimes.

Controversy gets views. It's the same with the news or gossip magazines or gathering around the lockers in high school. And speaking of high school, a great number of viewers on YouTube are very young, which is a population prone to starting and watching drama.

That's very true. But it just seems to me that the drama is getting bigger and worse nowadays. Has that always been around or is it really getting bad?
