This S**t Just Got Real, looking for Gaming advice

I've Got It
Last month my wife and kids said I should trying making gaming videos. They think I'm funny in a Ben Stein Kind of way but, I'm not sure that's really a compliment. I'm not a gamer and my computer is a 5 year old company laptop that was a discontinued model purchased for $300. To say video editing on my computer is a challenge is an understatement. I blew them off and forgot all about it.

Well Like I said in the thread title, "This S**t Just Got Real". For Christmas my wife and kids built me a gaming computer. I feel like I've just been dropped into the 21 st century and I'm loving this clicky mechanical keyboard.

So what the hell do I do now. I have no games and I'm probably old enough to be your grandfather. I feel like I should at least try a few games. As a suggestion I downloaded Kerbal Space Program last night and it seems interesting.

From looking at gamer post on this forum there is a lot to take into consideration. Things like which game, video capture, copy right, game play, walk throughs, etc.

looking for good advice. Don't mind rude snarky comments if you don't mind me stealing them and using them as my own.

I would recommend looking into games bundles like the Humble Bundle. They offer a wide variety of games all at lower prices, and it helps charity. Something else you could do is go to Game Jolt, and find free to play indie games on there. Until January 2nd, Steam is having its holiday sale, so you might want to cash in on that while you still have the chance.

For copyright, just remember to look at a game's terms of service, though most games allow for video creating anyways, as it offers free advertisement.

What I am about to say has come from analysing youtube for a long time trying to decide the best way for myself to create a channel. I decided I did not like gaming channels that much and for me it would be a lot of dedication and not really my style of film making.
But please read this, you don't have to agree this is just what I have seen on Youtube.

Personally I don't think the soul reason of having a gaming pc should force you into making videos as I have a GTX 780 Ti in my pc, which was very expensive and I feel no obligation to making videos. I myself am starting out a vlogging channel which is very different but for the past year I have been posting random videos on a kind of gaming channel.

What you need to remember is how big other youtube gamers are and how long they have been going for. It is extremely hard to get a big audience and I feel the gaming community makes it even harder. But if you are looking for a style to do I would suggest watching WoodysGamerTag as I used to watch him a lot and I think that style would suit you, based off what you have said here.

Also the games you should play are the ones you want to, don't feel you must play games you don't like just to please audiences, but saying this I would also say do not play games such as minecraft or call of duty for videos as these are done way too much and big channels for these games have already been established and the type of viewer watching these won't stray far from the channels they already know.

I hope this has helped

Thanks Dino. My youngest son got me signed up with Steam last night and that's where I got the Kerbal space game from. I think I'm going to take advantage of some of the sales. Just don't know which ones yet.

with someone starting off with no gaming experience, i say help the indie developers. theres a lot of games free out there and someone who been through life can help indie developers on their games because you wont rage quit on them.

Thanks Valky. The one thing I didn't get with my new computer was a video camera to clip to the monitor. I'm going to get one soon.

If you can, get a HD kind of Camera. Noone can tell your expression if it is too blurry =)

Thanks Technomania. It's interesting that you bring up the indie game developers. He was showing me some of the Indie games last night and one that I found interesting was a first person shooter zombie game that starts with a couple of cops in a dinner. Can't remember the name though. Gonna try to find it again.[DOUBLEPOST=1419609168,1419608866][/DOUBLEPOST]

Good point. I could put the face cam image in the corner. I think showing your face is very important. I think that regardless of what you look like having video of, or an image of, your face in the video makes the video more engaging.

I find this entire thread fascinating. I definitely think you should go for it. Going by your channel's content though, it might be in your best interest to start a new channel for it. Maybe try a test run where you do some gaming videos on your current channel and see how your audience reacts.
