Length of content affecting your audience retention?

Hello y'all.
I'm a moderately new Youtuber (6 months of posting videos) and I noticed that my audience retention wasn't as great as I thought. This made me think of this question: Does the length of your videos affect the audience retention? My videos are usually around 7 minutes and I've been thinking about trying out a new show where I'd have to make the video under 1 minute. The idea is called "One Minute Fridays" and I'd research an interesting question (just off the top of my head "Why does paper absorb water?" or "Why do you think of amazing ideas in a shower?") and once I officially asked the question a clock would pop up and I'd have to answer it within a minute. So the actual length of the video including intros and outs would probably be around 1:30. Any thoughts on this idea? Are my claims about audience retention legitimate? Thank you for your help.

My retention is less than have of the total length of the video no matter how long the video. I would say to go ahead and create your new segment/series and see how it goes. It also gives you something new to create, learn and grow.

View time will be lower, though, unless you give the viewer a compelling reason to stay on YouTube. It's better (at least from an SEO perspective) to have someone watch 4 minutes of an 8 minute video than the entirety of a 90 second video.

I do try to keep my videos under 5 minutes unless I just can't for a particular video, but it seems my average view time is under 50% no matter what. Perhaps I am an acquired taste that not many people have acquired yet!

Same here - anywhere from 30 to 60% retention, depending on the video.

A couple have gone as high as 70%.

The length of the video seems irrelevant.

Seems to vary more with subject.

Not something I worry about as you can't cater for all tastes.
