I feel like that's what happens with most channels, hardly anyone blows up within a couple of days of posting their first video (unless they already had a following elsewhere!)
The only way is up!

Definitely a positive thing to think about. I'm not quite growing as fast as I'd like but after almost a year of consistent posting I've got 171 subs. Not exactly blowing the doors off of anything but I've got a collection of people who actively watch and comment on all my videos so it'll be interesting to see how I fare over the next year. It can be frustrating when a video I work extra hard on doesn't generate much interest though.

I agree! The way I see it is the first year or two are for building the foundation of your channel.
