I find that there's not much to keep my attention. Have you considered using more colour's along with ambient music relevant to the era that you cover in each video?
Maybe some dynamic music that begins to play when you cover sections that is more serious for example if you are talking about an important battle then some kind of cinematic music plays. Check out some videos on the History channel and see how they do it.
Music sets the mood and also tells the viewer how to feel in that moment. That's why music and sound design is absolutely important in a good movie or documentary.

I've attached an example of colorful stick figures. Maybe you can put your own spin on it with Knights, Horses or what ever era you are covering. Maybe some basic animation??
