How important is it to “stay on brand”?

I've Got It
How important is it to only produce one type of content? What’s the harm in having like vlogs, sketch comedy, let’s plays, and like music videos or something all on one channel? I’m contemplating doing some gaming but I primarily do vlog type of videos. But I’m not too confident that I’ll be consistently posting gaming videos so I don’t want to create an all new channel. How important do you think it is to produce only one type of content? I’ll Definitely have different playlists for everything.

Don’t be afraid to branch out. Your channel is for you to direct and have fun with. That will carry through in your personality and ultimately you’ll have people following your channel not for specific content but for YOU.

Hi Brett,

It's impossible to "stay on brand" until you have a brand.

In the early stages of your channel you have a name for your channel...but this is not the same as a brand.
In my opinion you need to create videos of all sorts, see what you enjoy making and find out what your viewers enjoy watching. Have fun, try out different things, with time you will see what works and what does not. If you want to build a brand then you need to focus on creating videos that your viewers enjoy and that have worked well for you in the past. At that point then yes...you would be well advised to "stay on brand".

Indeed:up2: Nothing wrong with mixing it up a bit. In the beginning I started out with one type of content only. Not only was it hard to come up with new video ideas but I also got pretty bored. So I started to mix it up and I still gain subscribers (some go of course) but in the long run it is good for me and my channel:)

I think in the beginning it's fine to change about video types as you decide what you want to do.

There’s nothing wrong with trying different things in my opinion. My channel is mostly music but I do other types of videos as well. I’ve thought about this in the past too. I think it’s better to do the variety of content now, rather than building up an audience with one type of content and introducing the other things later when your audience has come to expect one thing.
