External Microphones?

Does anyone use an external microphone with their video camera? Personally I have never used one because I haven't really needed to. What sorts of videos require them and make them a necessity, I am gathering places with high background noise perhaps? If you have one do you find it very beneficial?

I have a good one I can use but it doesnt fit the jack on my camcorder I think I need an adapter, having one will increase the sound quality.

I dont use one my built in one works okay for me.
