What makes a good thumbnail?

What makes a really good thumbnail that makes a person most likely to click on the video regardless of reading the title? I would imagine it would have the most important keyword/topic. But is there something people are more attracted to? Such as a flat background, or image, etc?

A good thumbnail is a thumbnail of the name of the game or picture of the game with some wording saying if its a lets play, walkthrough, tutorial or something, if its in a series it is also helpful to have like a number in the corner saying what number in the series it is, kinda like my far cry 3 thumbnail below
