I see a lot of "How I got x subscribers in 6 months" and whatnot. But what is a realistic timeline to set for oneself just starting out? What kind of goals should be set for the first month? First six months? And so on and so forth.

There's no specific goals and expectations that applies to everyone. It depends on your niche, skills, time available to commit to your channel and your purpose for being on Youtube. And of course, there's luck involved. If you're first starting out, give it your absolute best your first few weeks and then you'll be able to set some realistic goals given your experience.

It really depends what kind of content you produce, how often you produce it, quality of production, target demographic and how well it is being shared with new viewers. I would say just do the best you can and the numbers will show.

Views have always been what translated into subscribers for me. Why not use them as a metric instead?
And the good news is that you can somewhat control views through your SEO game. Check out some of the tutorial subforums on here for info on how to do that.

It's how your Title, Description, and Tags help your video be found in search.
Start typing into the youtube search bar and look at the auto fill results. Those are search terms waiting to be fought for.

The problem with asking this is that it is entirely subjective.
  • Your target audience.
  • Quality of production.
  • Depth of social media marketing.
  • Relevance of your content to right now
I think the best YouTube timeline you can set for yourself is whatever progress you want to make. If you make that, you're doing fine! :D

I think it depends on what you want to achieve on YouTube. Everyone has different goals that they want to reach so make your own goals. The best thing to do is create the best content you can and see what happens.
