In my opinion it depends a bit on the type of the video you're making and of course on your PC's (or whatever you use) specifications but I also prefer the MP4 format (for 720p).

I render to a wmv from sony vegas. However when I upload a video to youtube I compress my mwv to a .avi! It is good quality/small file and youtube accepts it 720p!
