The You Generation/Base79

Loving YTtalk
Hey guys! I just created an account here and it was mainly because after endless googling, I'm not sure what to do and I figured someone here could help me maybe?

So I just recently started making videos and only have 7 videos, 29 subs, and 591 views. My channel is obviously in the "hey I'm just starting and testing things out because fun reasons and stuff" stage. As part of this "new thing" I'm trying I entered The You Generation's Comedy Competition. I didn't really get a lot of views or anything from it - they didn't even put me in the auditions playlist, so I thought no more about it until I received a message from them saying that they wanted me to join their (TYG) network. It's part of Base79 and the contract says 50/50 revenue split and lasts for 24 months. As anyone on youtube, I think being offered anything is really cool, but after researching this doesn't seem very appealing. I honestly don't even care about 50/50 because I never have made money from youtube and didn't really expect to, but I just don't like the 2 year contract.

I don't have the funds for a lawyer to modify the contract and send it back to them (which is a piece of advice I found on a few other websites), but I don't really want to sign the contract as is.

So basically, I would be interested, but I don't want to sign myself for a 2 year commitment. However, I am a bit confused as to why they would pick someone with such low stats anyway and that makes me feel like I don't really have much weight in any contract negotiations.

I know this is long, but has anyone had this happen to them or have any advice? I appreciate everything in advance!

I know it's terrible, but because I don't even make anything from it on my own it's not like I would really be losing anything? I've heard that people sometimes ask for 6 month contracts? Because 50/50 for 6 months I wouldn't really care, but 2 years is a bit much when I don't even know what I'm doing.

You should wait to get partnered. 50/50 split is horrible. You say you don't really care about it right now, but what if you start making more views and have the possibility to make more money, but your pay is cut in half until that contract is over. I don't know much about Base79, but I know there are networks out there that provide a better split, offer a shorter contract (Probably 1 year), and are an all around better network.

Yeah, I also saw something that said if one network contacts you, then others would be interested as well. Joining a network is something that I would be interested in, but I feel like I need to do a bit more on my own first. I was also unsure if this was something that they sent out to everyone who entered the contest anyway.

I have a same problem with you. 2 days ago some local YT partner want me to join them. But, as you can see, my channel are small (12 subs, 667 views) It makes my feel unworthy.. But i think about it again, and decide to join them, because i think this is a chance. About the contract, mine is 70:30 but i don't really concern with it yet

well if you're just having fun and experimenting with your channel i don't think you'd need a Partnership.being apart of a network doesn't do too much for you when you are first starting out. just work on your channel for now :)

Yeah, that's what I'll probably do for now. When I searched the company I saw that some Hollywood guy just invested $10mil for the youtube portion so it sounded to me like they were trying to expand to, but I just didn't know and decided to ask if anyone around here had anything similar. But thank you for your advice![DOUBLEPOST=1370655391,1370655359][/DOUBLEPOST]

I'm really interested to hear if this works out for you!

1) Read my signature

2) while 50/50 is horrible, the 2 years is worse. What happens if you steadily grow until you are getting 100k views per month? or 1m views per month? Then the 50/50 is even WORSE because they won't let you out nor re-negotiate.

3) They won't do ANYTHING to help your channel. I'm not sure what you are expecting to get out of a partnership, but I'm telling you --- you will get nothing you couldn't do on your own for free and easily.

Is there anything you are looking for in particular? I can address it specifically as to if they will help or not.

(Note: Most of the above is fairly generic, not really aimed @ Base79. However by offering a 50/50 for 2 years they automatically are on my s**t list.)

I was under the impression that partners were supposed to help with equipment, editing, and "pushing the video across the network". I do see a lot of partners nowadays and a lot of channels that are partnered so I'm wondering if it's just a thing that is going to happen to youtube where eventually every channel is part of a network? From other websites I read I also thought that the company would offer an awful deal and then you're supposed to send something back with a different deal and negotiate from there.
As you've said, I was mainly worried about the 2 years as well.

1) No equipment unless there is a specified budget in the contract (there won't be unless you add it)

2) No promotion in any significant way

They generally send a basic offer to everyone, which you can negotiate with them and try to come to an agreement. Some networks will simply not negotiate. Ignore them and move on.

Remember: YOU are the customer. They are earning money if you sign with them - they need to make you a GOOD offer for you to join. Don't let feel 'honored' they are willing to accept you, it is a purely business decision on their part.
