Other than Windows Movie Maker there aren't so many free options that really perform well and on their own. I have recently check out Lightworks Beta and it can be quite confusing at first but it is rather powerful. The only slight issue I had with it was having to install the codecs it recommends and having to sign up to the website to download it:

Lightworks is free, it's the editing software behind filsm like Shutter Island and the Kings Speech, but it will take a lot of man hours to figure out how to use it.

I wouldn't really recommend pirating programs as it is illegal.But I do recommend Wax, it's easy to use and it is very good.
It isn't the one I use, but it is good for a free one.
