Making a good standard background? (HELP)

So, I have a question: How can I make a good background, that attracts people when they see it, when I only have standard layout.
Youtube Partners can put everything at the very top, making it easy for them, but non-partners only have the sides, which are VERY limited in space. If anyone could give me a few tips, that'd be awesome

The space limitation you refer to is entirely dependent on screen resolution. At 1920x1080 the sidebars combined are nearly 50% of the page.

I would just go with some simple textures and text on the side, since only about 8.1% of people in January 2012 are using Full HD resolution.
