Many youtube accounts ago I found that a lot of my content wasn't available because of copyright issues with the audio. How does this work? Is it only with popular music artists? Or is it with every piece of music?

Nearly all music is copyrighted, though some is in the Content ID system and they pick up on your video automatically. If you don't want Copyright claims use CC or Royalty Free Music.

Watch these two videos by Hank Green. I watched them and found them helpful.
