Like the questions stated above, how do you buy rights or ask permission to a popular song to use for your youtube channel to avoid copyright? Would you guys email them, youtube dm them, tweet them, facebook message them? What would be the most efficient way?

I know you can use royalty free music, but there are just some songs that you love and I wouldn't mind supporting the artist or label if it fits my budget and I can use their song to make my videos speak its message.

If anyone has done this before, would you be able to share your experience

Emailing the owner of the song might be your best bet. Or maybe their manager If they have one.

I would say just try to get in contact with them through email as well.

When they say "Email the owner" the owner isn't usually the pop star or whatever. It's usually the record label. They are the ones who usually own the rights. Now I would also like to point out this probably won't be cheap to buy the rights to use the media in your video. Hopefully that helps.
