Mostly it's HARD work!
I treat YouTube as a full time job now. But here are some big things I do:
1. Spend 1-2 hours every night commenting on other peoples videos offering them advice, feedback or simply encouragement. When conversation sparks I often lead them to my channel in a hopefully no-spammy way.
It sounds annoying but when I do this I gain 10-30 subs a night!
2. Upload regularly: I upload 2-3 times a week and try to be consistent. I also try to make every video count and be high quality. I started using end screens and annotations - as well as interacting with viewers and asking them to like, sub and comment etc.
3. Get to know other youTubers in your Niche on a personal scale.
I am doing collabs with others travel vloggers and even meeting them when I visit their countries.
4. Keep solid check of Social Blade:
I check mine multiple times a day. My goal is to keep going UP.
2 months ago my future projection for 5 years time was 3000 subs.
Today it hit 15,000 subs in 5 years.
I keep working harder until it will say 150,000 subs and so on.
5. Set bigger and better goals:
In january I wanted to reach 100 subs in 1 month... I did it.
Then in February I wanted to hit 200 subs in 1 month... I did it 1 week early.
In march I want to hit 400 subs in 1 month... Here's to the new challenge.
Having a specific goals makes you more determined.
Saying 10,000 in 1 year is vague.
So I say 100 in 1 week! It's more accurate and makes you work harder as you only have 1 week to achieve it rather than an entire year!
Pressure is your best friend!
6. Watch how other YouTubers do it - see how they grow and try to repeat their marketing techniques.
