Im using FCPX. Im new to it. My clips snap together in the timeline. If I don't want them to snap together and to be able to move and have a space between them how do I do that?

Press “n” it’s called snapping

Option W inserts a space on the timeline. I’ve seen some people just lay black on the timeline and video on top and audio underneath so they can move it without snapping
