Hello YTTalkers!

Quick discussion topic for everyone on here, perhaps food for thought at the very least.

Controversy.

Is it a valid marketing and promotion technique to get noticed? This is not a question of if it works, it is a marketing technique that does work - both negatively (in the recent case of Logan Paul) or positively (in, for a well known example, the case of Rosa Parks back in 1955). Aiming this discussion more towards if - in your own opinion - you see it as a valid method of promotion.
For example, most would consider shout outs and colabs a valid method of promotion and marketing.
The discussion being; is controversy?

Is it acceptable to a point? Is it acceptable under certain circumstances, e.g to prove a point or send a message?
Thoughts?

If you want views, controversy is going to get you them. You'll get both a lot of support and a lot of hate. Your channel turn out very polarizing depending on how you work it. And one of the most important things for a YouTuber is a relevancy, and that's being talked about. If people are interested in you, your career is going to improve.

But there is a downside to being controversial. And it's that less people and less brands might be willing to associate with you. YouTube Rewind, for example, really hates promoting controversial creators. They want family friendly, positive, vanilla creators in their video. Same thing with advertisers. Some sponsors will be reluctant to work with you, and YouTube is also going to be more likely to demonetize you. YouTube actually even just temporarily suspended Logan Paul's ad revenue.

So it can go either way. But in my opinion, if you're going to be controversial, at least be a decent human being. Don't be a Logan Paul.
