Content vs Promotion in the Beginning

Hi All,

I wanna ask, in your opinion, how would you weight your effort in content and promotion in the beginning? Right now my channel has little videos and subs, in the last months my highest viewed video gets 900 views only, and lowest is 1 view for 3 weeks. So I am still at the very beginning stage. Should I put more efforts in making more and better (hopefully~) content? or more effort in trying to promote at this stage?

also, if I am going to promote, but I dont wanna use money to do so, How should I do so? I tried reddit - not promoter friendly; facebook groups - not much effects; twitter/instagram - never use before, no followers whatsoever; other forums - also not exactly promoter friendly.

i'd say both. i'm trying to grow my channel too, so other than making videos and improving content, i try to socialise on various websites (though i realised i like yttalk a lot so i try to come online every day). you can try twitter because many small youtubers are trying to help each other out, interact with people, use hashtags, etc. instagram's harder but you may get more exposure because of hashtags.

don't try to hard sell yourself, but rather build relationships.

EVO is right, try to create a good looking channel with more contents.
For my opinion there is nothing that works better than ADS, online and offline!!
Consider this... its been created for business purpose

I would concentrate on good quality content for now. Build a library of videos before promoting.
That's good advice. There is no point drawing people to your channel through promotion if you do not have a good selection of videos for them to watch when they get there. First produce...then promote.

Promotion kills audience retention which will kill your rankings in search.

Concentrate on making good, regular content with good SEO. Let the viewers find you rather than the other way around. It's a bit slower in the short term, but in the long term, that's how channels blow up.

ONLY 900 views on a video? 900 is better than 0, you must be doing something right in order to get those kind of views so keep pushing out good content and just try and connect with as many people as possible, im just starting out and id give anything to just have 100 views on one video! and like 50+ subscribers just so ive got an audience to cater too.

Keep working hard and youll slowly climb! :)

Good luck !!

Great advice! We totally agree with this

Promotion is important but only when you have great content. I completely agree with Crown comment that promotion kill audience retention and audience retention is super important.
One advantage of promoting after creating multiple videos of good quality is that when you promote one video youtube starts suggesting creator videos, so its a win win situation when you have more videos.

But you know we may talk about audience retentions when our numbers will be good enough (million views) otherwise in case of channels with thousand views ... mmmh these numbers are too small and ridicolous to do stats guys... i know im rude but honest

This is a marketing rule: until a business is nothing, and a channel with hundreds or thousands subs doesnt mean nothing, the main purpose is to get a large audience... once we have done that THERE IS A SENSE in talking about audience retention, percentage of views, stats and bla bla
