-I'm not sure if I'm in the right place or not, so please let me know. Also, I do plan on editing my other thread for review of the final image, but I felt like I should make a new thread, because this is a help thread, and the other is a review thread. Please let me know if I should have done otherwise. Thanks-

So, I'm in the process of making a new avatar (and eventually a new banner) but Paint.Net is being rude.
When I try to copy over an image ("Commander Matt") onto a black background, Paint.Net carries over the empty space, which is very annoying, as I can't fill in the empty space with the fill tool, because it looks all wonky (see attached image)
Is it possible to merge the templates, or successfully copy it over without it going wonky?
Thanks!
[Attached example of "Wonky." Upper and lower blocks greyed for convenience]
P.S. Plugin tools are accepted. :)

Did you make a separate layer for the background and text?
Try that.
